“Whooo! We’re getting married!”
LGBTQ supporters in Minnesota rejoiced at Friday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision, which recognized the constitutional right to same-sex marriage in all 50 states.
Same-sex couples in Minnesota have had the right to get married for nearly two years, but the ruling means Minnesota marriages will now be recognized in other states. It also means one more barrier of discrimination has been knocked down.
The ruling came during Minnesota’s Pride celebration which marks the Stonewall Riots that touched off the LGBTQ equal rights revolution. Minnesota’s pride event is among the largest in the country. Hundreds of people were celebrating at events in Loring Park and at a Pride block party in the Uptown area.
